When I wake the next morning to find Benji next to me, the first feeling is happiness. The absolutely pure, undiluted kind. Because Benji looks so cute, lying flat on his back and breathing lightly. This close, I can see details of his face I normally miss, the way his eyelashes are so dark for most of their length but lighten at the end, the slight creases at the corner of his eyes which hint at laughter lines to come.

But my happy feeling that comes from watching Benji only has sole occupancy inside me for a few seconds before it is shoved aside by worry.

What have I done?

When I came over last night, my only focus was on continuing what had started at Flat Rock. More kissing of Benji. More getting to touch him. It was like a desperate itch I needed to have scratched.

And boy, did the mutual scratching feel good.

But now, all the reasons why I’ve never taken this step with Benji pile back into my mind. He’s my oldest friend. And even worse, I now live in London. There is no way this can ever be more than a summer fling.

I need to get back to my house before Mum notices I’m missing. But it’s so difficult to leave Benji and climb out of bed rather than just snuggle closer to him.

Forcing more willpower than I thought was possible, I make myself get up.

What should I do? Wake him up to say goodbye? He looks so peaceful lying there, I don’t want to disturb him. And what can I say to him? My head is a jumble of thoughts, I need to sort out what I’m thinking before I attempt to have a conversation with Benji.

So instead of waking him, I scrounge around for a piece of paper and pen and scribble a note to leave on his bedside table.
